The Interstate Compact on Educational Opportunity for Military Children addresses the needs of military students dealing with many transitions during their lifetime.  Due to the mobile nature of military life, the military child moves an average of 6 - 9 times between kindergarten and 12th grade.

North Carolina was one of the first states to adopt the Interstate Compact.  All 50 states are now members of the Interstate Compact Commission.  For more information about the Compact and links to all 50 states, click here

The purpose of the compact is to remove barriers to educational success or "level the playing field"  by encouraging consistency and coordination among states.

Specific areas addressed are:

  • educational records and enrollment
  • placement and attendance
  • eligibility
  • immunizations
  • graduation requirements
  • extracurricular activities
