Please join us in congratulating Dr. Lane Mills, Superintendent Elect for Craven County Schools. Dr. Mills will officially begin as Superintendent on Feb. 20. 2012. Please read below regarding Dr. Mills' biography and accomplishments. Without a doubt, Craven County Schools is fortunate to shortly have such an outstanding administrator.
 

DR. LANE B. MILLS BIOGRAPHY

 

Dr. Lane B. Mills comes to Craven County from Wilson, NC, where he currently serves as an Associate Professor of Educational Leadership at East Carolina University. In this role, his focus has been the development and supervision of assistant principals, principals, central office staff and superintendents. He has worked closely with aspiring leaders to prepare them for success in the K-12 environment through coursework, doctoral preparation and direct supervision of internship experiences.

Dr. Mills also currently serves as a consultant focused on facilitating school improvement with district leadership teams and principals in several school districts including New Hanover County Schools, Nash-Rocky Mount Schools and Sampson County Schools.

Prior to his position at ECU, Dr. Mills served as Assistant Superintendent of Wilson County Schools. Under his leadership in the area of technology, Wilson County Schools received the Governor's Programs of Excellence Award for Integrated Technology and was a national award winning system for the Ohana Foundation Technology Leadership Award. Dr. Mills was also one of four national finalists and winners of the Technology and Learning Magazine's Ed Tech Leader of The Year.

Dr. Mills is a sought after keynote speaker and a faculty lecture award winner. He has been published on topics ranging from "Using Emotional Intelligence in Formative Evaluation" to "Going Green With Technology" in professional publications such as The School Administrator, School Superintendent's Insider, Educational Leadership Review, Hot Chalk Magazine and School CIO, Technology and Learning Magazine to name a few.

Dr. Mills is a 1989 Cum Laude graduate of East Carolina University with a BA in Psychology/Sociology. He received his MA in School Psychology from the University of South Carolina in 1992 and continued there to receive his PhD in School Psychology in 1995. He currently holds a Professional Educator's License from the NC State Board of Education for Superintendent, Principal K-12, School Psychologist and Curriculum Specialist.

Dr. Mills states, "I think the Superintendent of Craven County Schools will need to spend a great deal of time over the next several years reassuring students, staff and parents that our work in this time of uncertainty is making a difference, that everyone is valued and that we are doing all we can to take care of our 'family'. " It is our strong belief that Dr. Mills will bring a collaborative and nurturing leadership style to the position of Superintendent as well as a keen understanding of the challenges we will be facing over the next several years.

Dr. Mills' wife, Melissa, currently serves as the media coordinator for an elementary school. She has also served as a public library director and library assistant at an academic law library. He and Melissa have two daughters. Grayson is ten years old and in fifth grade. She enjoys singing, reading and all things fashion! Emerson, who is six years old and in first grade, likes spy gadgets, surf boards and electric guitars.

It is with great pleasure that the Craven County Board of Education welcomes Dr. Lane B. Mills as the newest member of the Craven County Schools special family.

 

 

January has been declared "School Board Appreciation Month" in North Carolina.
